Microchats

Side conversations anchored to one doubt, with a context file that captures the topic's state.

Microchats

A microchat is a focused side conversation about one specific doubt that emerged from your main chat — a term, a mechanism, a question worth its own thread. The main conversation stays clean; the doubt gets full attention.

The lifecycle: open, ask, close

  1. Open one from a selected quote ("Ask in a microchat"), from a citation, or whenever a tangent starts to grow in the main chat.
  2. Ask freely — the quoted passage anchors the first question, and the microchat keeps its own thread, separate from the main conversation.
  3. Close it when you are done. On close, Lunar generates a context file that captures the state of the topic: a summary, its importance, open questions and a suggested next step.

Microchats open in tabs, so you can keep several side conversations alive at once and jump between them without losing your place in the main chat.

The context file

Each microchat's context file has two parts:

  • Structured metadata generated by Lunar: summary, state of the topic, importance, open questions and a suggested next step.
  • A readable body in plain markdown, which you can edit freely.

[!IMPORTANT] Your edits always win. If you edit the body by hand, later regenerations never overwrite your text — only the metadata gets refreshed. The file is yours to curate.

The main chat reads them

Your main chat takes relevant microchats into account automatically. A quick local filter first checks which microchats relate to your current message; only genuinely ambiguous cases get a smarter second pass. You can also attach a microchat to a message explicitly, which always includes it.

When a microchat's context was actually used in a response, Lunar shows a short indicator ("Reading microchat: X") — nothing appears out of nowhere.

[!TIP] Use each microchat's "open questions" section as your personal backlog of doubts to clear — it survives the conversation and feeds back into the main chat.
